The Monona city council will have a short-ish meeting on Monday, May 16. The council will likely approve the annual alcohol license renewals. The Monona LRC recommended approval of all the licenses, but imposed conditions on two of them. The East Side Club's license for its Tiki Bar continues to have minor restrictions to reduce noise impacts on their neighbors.
The Bourbon Street Grille agreed to add two conditions to its license: 1. To install 16 video cameras and 2. To develop a plan for patrons to safely exit the building when a large event is being hosted. The plan is subject to the approval of the Police Chief.
The best news are the reappointment of Mary O’Connor and Melissa Zietz to the Library Board (July 2011–July 2014).
The Personnel and Finance Committee will be discussing the purchase of "Laptop Computers / Notebooks for City Council." Actually, the proposal developed by staff calls for iPADs rather than laptops or notebooks.

Any idea what became of the Princeton Club on Monona Drive? Construction was supposed to have started in March. The rumor is that the project is canceled, but no-one seems to be able to confirm it.
ReplyDeleteLast I heard - a couple months ago - it was still on, but it has dragged on.
ReplyDeleteThe latest problems at Bourbon Street (fight and 14 officers being called in )and the fact that they did NOT upheld their in of the last agreement makes wonder WHY was a license extended to them again.
ReplyDeleteIt is time for them to take their show and move it elsewhere.
iPads for city council members? That sounds awesome, if not extravagant. Who came up with this idea, and why do they think we need iPads?

ReplyDeleteIt's not that simple. Once this type of license is granted, the licensee has a constituionaly protected property interest in the renewal of the license. The city cannot simply decline to nonrenew their license. The city would have had to prove that the BSG had violated the provisions of the state law governing these licenses.
The conditions I mentioned have been added to their license and a violation of those conditions would be grounds for revocation or nonrenewal.

I requested that staff develop some info on providing computers for council members. The mayor had mentioned his interest as well.
We discussed this item at Finance last evening and alder Munson was on hand to raise his very valid questions. The iPads would cost about $700 each. The city could reduce paper, printing, and handling costs. Environmental impact is not simple either.
I do think the iPads would help the alders and mayor do our jobs better and have much more info readily available during meetings or during meeting prep.
The Finance committee asked staff to gather more data on cost reduction in paper, etc.
It may or may not pan out, but I don't see this as extravagant.
Jeff Wiswell could lease his out to help offset the cost, since he wouldn't use it anyway.

Please think the iPad purchase through thoroughly. I am a developer for Apple devices and have been using an iPad for over a year now and an iPhone for 3 years. I think the iPad is a wonder device, but on the surface, this seems like a bad idea.
ReplyDeleteHere are some things to keep in mind.
• An iPad cannot be used as a stand alone device. A computer is necessary for upgrades and syncing. Do you already have suitable computers to accomplish this? Also, does someone have the technical expertise to manage this?
• The syncing computer must have iTunes and a high speed Internet connection (the software updates are frequent and large). iTunes has to be kept up to date, so you better make sure the syncing computer has a recent version of Windows that will be iTunes compatible.
• An iPad won't play nicely with Microsoft formats out of the box. You'll have to download Pages from the App Store. Didn't Monona spend a big chunk of change last year for Microsoft Office software licenses? Does anyone know how to use Pages? Have you accounted for this purchase?
• Think specifically of what you are going to use it for and how you're going to accomplish it. For example, how are you going to get documents for review onto the iPad? Are you going to email them out to alders (better make sure its in a compatible file format and have them load it on before meetings)? Everyone also needs to have a wifi connection at their home or at village hall.
• An iPad doesn't have unique logins/profiles like a normal computer, so can't be shared across users easily.
• Has anyone tried to type on an iPad? Its misery. If you need to type, you better have money for physical keyboards and docking stations too (not cheap since you must get one specifically for the device).
• iPads start out at $500. The more expensive ones are 3G capable and have bigger storage. I don't think this would be needed for your purposes (document reviews). Maybe the $700 number is accounting for some of the accessories previously mentioned.
• Who is going to train everyone to use these? They are easy to use, but I wouldn't expect everyone to be able to jump right into it if they don't have previous experience with Apple devices.
• Will you buy warranties? If not, what happens when someone drops it and the pretty glass screen shatters. Add screen protectors and protective cases to the list of needed accessories.
• Some people don't like reading on an iPad. It doesn't resemble paper the way a Kindle/eInk does.
From my superficial view, this doesn't seem like an idea that has been thought through. If you're using it just to view documents, the Kindle will do it just fine for a lot less money and hassle. If you're thinking about using it in place of a normal computer, it really isn't a replacement.
I say get the Ipad. Who cares if it is not going to work quite right and will take a long time to get the payback? You will look cool, hip and environmentally friendly (from a superficial perspective anyways.)

ReplyDeleteI object to the IPAD because you are pushing the cost of doing Monona's city business to China or a different country at least paper keeps the cost in the US and we are not exploiting another country.
This is very interesting. iPads seem to push a lot of buttons for a lot of people in a lot of ways.
