I am reposting this after the heart-stopping win over the Bears (I posted it a week ago after Packers win over Atlanta). How can a game be so lopsided and come down to an INT with less than two minutes to go in the games???

By the way, I hate to mention it, but the Packers need to work on their INT celebrations. The entire state of Wisconsin was first screaming at BJ Raji to tuck the ball away - "Please Mr. Raji, stop waving the ball around before you get in the end zone." And then a few minutes later, I could hear you all screaming - err, quietly suggesting to #37, young Mr. Shields, that he should "Get down, get down, GET DOWN!". (The suggestion was intended not as prelude to boogieing. It meant lay down with the ball before it is removed from your grasp by a person wearing a navy blue and white uniform with orange lettering and trim.)

Seriously, these guys have no clue who Leon Lett is or why he is remembered for a blunder in Super Bowl XXVII (that was 1993). McCarthy should crack out that old tape.

After the Packers game, didn't you feel like dancing? (Sorry about the advertising - it's not mine.)

Music in the Park

There will be a concert at the Winnequah Park Gazebo on Tuesday, June 29th at 7 PM. The Monona Chamber Musicians will present a program of light orchestral music including the Barber of Seville Overture, Vivaldi's Summer from the Four Seasons as well as some patriotic and "Americana" music.


The concert will begin at 7:00 PM (listed incorrectly on the Monona State Bank sign) and concert goers are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs.

Petition for Music Excellence at MG Schools

Passing along a message that floated in on the Ee-lectronical ether mail about retaining music excellence at MG schools.

Hello-


As many of you know, a group of CG and Monona folks have gotten together to express concern about the staffing of our strings program given the potential cuts in several music teachers for next year. In short, if both elementary strings teachers are cut, but the program is retained it may be taught by a teacher who is technically certified, but not experienced or qualified to teach strings.

Andrew Taylor has composed an excellent online petition asking the board to consider qualifications such as experience and ability when staffing our music programs. Please take a peek at the link below, and if you agree, sign and forward on. It would also be very helpful if the Board and Administration (principals) got individual emails and if people came to the 4/28 board meeting.

To be clear, this has nothing to do with not making necessary cuts, or with the closing or non closing of Maywood. We are simply asking that within the context of the retained programs and teachers, that many factors be taking into account.

A Memnonium for Monona?

Chickens in backyards? Bridges in Winnequah Park? Heck, we need one of these. We could call it a Mononanium.

The Vocal Memnon and Solar Thermal Automata

A memnonium is a self-actuating system that generates music using solar energy. The name comes from the statue of Memnon, a famous tourist attraction in the Greco-Roman world that was said to emit sound when warmed by the morning sun. The Memnon statue inspired the design of musical automata in later periods, to which there are many historical references. Several intriguing technologies and engineering methods may be well suited for modern memnonium design efforts. However, full realization of solar thermoacoustic and thermokinetic sculpture would likely require deep collaboration between physics, music and other disciplines. In modern times, only a few simple proof-of-concept memnonia have been constructed.

Water and technology conspired to impart the power of speech to lifeless stone near ancient Thebes. C. Perry's A View of the Levant, published in 1743, thus describes the mysterious Memnon Colossi (1375 B.C.): "The Northernmost, said to be the statue of Memnon, is cover'd with a great number of Greek and Latin Inscriptions; being so many testimonies of Persons who pretend to have heard it utter a Sound at Sun-rise" (Baines and Málek, 95). The voice of Vocal Memnon was evidently produced by a concealed water organ in which "solar heat was used to siphon water from one closed tank into another and so produce compressed air for sounding . . . pipes" (The New Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments, s.v. "water organ"). Water organs were described centuries later by Ctesibius (second century B.C.), Philo of Byzantium (second century B.C.), and Hero of Alexandria (first century A.D.).

"This is a segment from D. A. Pennebaker's film, Dont Look Back (a documentary on Bob Dylan's tour of England in 1965). In the film, Dylan holds up cue cards for the audience with words from the song on them. While staring at the camera, he flips the cards as the song plays. Interestingly, there are intentional errors throughout the video. For instance, the song's lyrics say "eleven dollar bills," but the poster says "20 dollars". The video takes place in an alley behind The Savoy Hotel in London where poet Allen Ginsberg makes a cameo appearance."
