Ice Skating Arrives in Monona!

The new-fangled sport of "ice skating" has been discovered on a local lagoon in Winnequah Park. Apparently, the sport involves attaching steel blades to the bottom of one's shoes and gliding across the ice. The kids say it's The bee's knees.

I jest. But really, the PW crew cleared part of the Winnequah Park lagoon on Tuesday (using a little bit of lagoon water to provide a smooth surface - not enough to create an air pocket and sustainable, too). The Mayor also requested that staff develop a plan to provide skating at another location that does not have the equipment-break-through-the-ice issues that the lagoon has.

  1. Do I dare ask if there are going to be hours that the warming hut is open?

Also, is there some information that can be gotten by asking Madison how they create and upkeep their skating rinks/areas? They flood areas at Olbrich, Tenney, Vilas, etc, so maybe they would be able to help us plan / execute our ideas?

Lastly, I know that there is a water pipe/spigot at Tenney that they use to flood the area (including the lagoon). Would it be worth installing something similar so that we wouldn't have to truck the water in?

    Thanks again,
    Travis

  2. So my wife and I braved the single-digit weather today to skate at Winnequah, and once we got moving it was quite pleasant. I'm still wondering about the shelter, though, and if there are any hours that it will be open to the public? Or would this be something that we'd have to specifically reserve?

  3. The legal fight with the architect has not been resolved and the city attorney has advised that we not use the shelter in the winter until it is resolved.

  4. I went skating today. It was lovely. Additional benches would be nice.

Also, what it be "legal" to start bomfire on some Fri night? I mean a fire pit would super swell-kinda of a poor man's warming house.

  5. An open fire in a public park? I seriously doubt that would be legal. I suppose we could have a fire pit easy enough, but it would be buried under two feet of snow.

You could just start a fire and enjoy it until the police arrive....

  6. A bonfire might be a nice funraiser for some benches.

  7. So if the warming hut is not equipped to deal with the cold due to insulation and water issues, could it at least be opened and heated (maybe a fire?) even if the bathrooms didn't work?

Overall I'm absolutely delighted to see that skating is finally back in Monona, and that people are out enjoying themselves.
