The Monona Public Library Board adopted the Library Director's recommendation to increase and adjust the hours of operation beginning in January 2009 based in part on the results of a recent survey and on patron usage patterns.
The major change is that the library will open at 9 a.m. Monday through Saturday. Sunday hours will be extended by one hour to 5 p.m. (only during the school year). The library will close two hours earlier on Thursday at 6 p.m. rather than 8 p.m. The library will be open a net of 63 hours during the school year (a gain of 4 hours) and 59 during the summer (a gain of 3).
Opening at 9 a.m. will allow the library to serve families with young children who are often waiting to get in the doors. Story time will start earlier and fit better with the little ones' nap schedules. Closing earlier on Thursday is less than optimal, but it is one of the lowest usage times during the week.
The increases and adjustments can be accomplished within Mayor Kahl's proposed 2.2% levy increase for the library.
