2010 Green Monona Tour is this Sunday, June 13
from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Get the guide. The Green Monona Tour is a city of Monona event sponsored by the ad hoc Sustainability Committee.
See a little or see it all, it's your call. Visit sites around the community and see what your fellow Mononans are doing to conserve resources, save money, and trying new ways of doing stuff - or rediscovering old ways.
Heather Gates summarizes over on the TNS Monona blog:
Check out rain gardens, organic vegetable plots, native gardens, a raised cold frame, and a lakefront terraced shoreline buffer. Learn about composting methods, rain gathering devices, a permeable driveway, and what a water-managing swale and berm do. Check out passive solar features, solar thermal and photovoltaic systems, dual-flush and composting toilets, reclaimed building materials, and much more!
I think you'll find that the GMT is better than last year's sucessful initial tour. The Tour has more exhibitors, like BurOak Designs/Kittleson Landscape, MG&E, Focus on Energy, Dane County Office of Lakes & Watersheds, Olbrich Botanical Gardens, Sustain Dane, Full Spectrum Solar, the Habitat ReStore, the Madison Area Permaculture Guild, and The Natural Step Monona. The exhbitiors will be located at tour sites around the city.
At noon, Parks & Recreation staff will install a rain barrel at the Monona Community Center. They haven’t installed a rain barrel before, so if you’ve been wanting to try it but were worried about attempting it, come see just how much novice effort it takes.
