The Monona Elementary PTO invites you to celebrate a new special permanent art installation during Monona Elementary Fine Arts Night next Wednesday, May 13 from 5-7 p.m. at Winnequah School at 800 Greenway Rd in Monona.
The “You Are There” clay tile mural unveiling will culminate a year-long effort to produce the mural as a new visual centerpiece of the Winnequah Cafeteria.“You Are There” is comprised of clay tile translations of drawings of Mononamade by Monona Kindergarten through 5th graders. The drawings were their artistic response to the question “What is wonderful about your world that should be included in our mural.” Each tile is marked with the clay artists’initials.
The project became a true school-community project, as parents and community members joined Winnequah students and staff to design, produce and glaze the tiles.
Funding for the mural was provided by a grant from the Dane County Cultural Arts Commission, The Huntington Learning Center, and The Monona Pie Party.
Jeanne and David Aurelius, owners of Clay Bay Pottery in Door County who served as special artists-in-residence for the tile mural project, will also attend Fine Arts Night to meet and greet parents and students, and to offer some of their pottery for sale. A portion of the proceeds of all sales goes to the Monona PTO.
Other features of the 2009 Monona Elementary Fine Art Night include:
• 4th and 5th grade string students performing under the direction of Jill Jensen.
• “Author's Sharing and Open Poetry Mic” during which students will read and perform the written word, both original and other favorites.
And what’s a celebration without food? The Monona PTO has that covered, as well, and will sell pizza and desserts for a nominal fee.
