Saving NRG

From the MILWAUKEE BUSINESS JOURNAL (The Business Journal of Milwaukee: Local Business News )

http://milwaukee.bizjournals.com/milwaukee/stories/2009/01/26/daily58.html?

A Texas college has signed contract with Johnson Controls under climate initiative. Just pondering whether this approach - an energy savings performance contract- would make sense for a municipality, like Monona.

Lee College in Baytown, Texas, has entered into an energy savings performance contract with Johnson Controls Inc., making Lee College the first signed contract for a higher education institution under the Clinton Climate Initiative.

The initiative’s energy efficiency building retrofit program brings together many of the world’s largest cities, real estate firms, financial institutions and energy service companies in an effort to reduce energy consumption in existing buildings across the municipal, institutional, commercial, private, educational and public housing sectors.

When complete, all 35 of Lee College’s facilities will be retrofitted. Upon completion, total electric consumption will be reduced by approximately 35 percent and energy and water costs will be reduced by 32 percent. A value for the contract was not disclosed.

  2. "HP?" Harold Polzer??

Ohhh, Henny Penny. Their approach is to put chickens on treadmills and dangle chicken feed in fron of them.

OK, not really. Their approach is to use an "energy savings performance contract".

    See, e.g.,

You, dear reader, are supposed to be doing the thinking on this one while I work - at work.

  3. Well-sheesh-I mean do they just tell staff to turn off the lights, turn down the thermostat, close the damn doors....or is this something more complicated.

    thanks

  5. There are a number of companies that specialize in energy savings performance contracts for local, state and federal government. I'd be surprised if your local municipal gov't had NOT been approached by sales reps from one or two of these companies (Johnson Controls, Noresco/Carrier, Ameresco, Honeywell, Siemens, Chevron, etc.). Look up NAESCO on the web if you're interested in the companies, although not all ESPC providers are included in the NAESCO list.

These contracts generally follow the IPMVP as a reference standard(google it).

And yes, it is a little more complicated than shutting off lights. But that's a place to start.
