Nonrandom Question Time Again

Post your nonrandomized questions here. Feel free to post answers as well.

Here's one:

"What is with E-bay selling Monona Police Department patches?"

I'm looking in to it.

  1. Is there any hint that Monona's access to credit will be curtailed or that it's credit rating may be affected by the financial markets? Will there be a need for increased property taxes at the time when property values are going down? The perfect storm for our times?

  2. Police patches? Apparently some officers trade patches and that's how they end up on ebay from all over the world.

  3. Monona access to credit.

Good question. The city is not issuing any bonds in the near future. However, high quality municipal bonds are something of a safe haven.

The yield on a 10-year A-rated bond has risen to 4.18% from 3.52% in the last month. That's a healthy spike, but nothing like corporate bonds. US Treasuries have been the ultimate safe haven with yields dropping sharply as people seek some place to stash their cash.

Overall the bad news just won't stop. AIG is teetering, GM bonds are nearly junk. The market was off another 7% today. Good/bad news: Oil prices have fallen to $85/barrel, but that's because of a collapse in demand.

OK, is the appropriate-I mean I can see the trading. However, I would strongly HOPE that is a against our rules or laws to purchase/sell them.

Why? (That's real, honest 'why' and not a snarky, dismissive 'why').

  6. First, I do not think PD patches should be traded like stickers. I am not sure how you stop it, but it is just a bad idea.

Second, it is my assumption here we issues a uniform to the officer, the officer does not buy it. Thus, the patch is our property.

But, I have bigger fish to fry working on the new guys campign for mayor and votin for o.

  7. Actually, I am pretty sure that the officers do purchase their own uniforms (I believe they get a clothing allowance in the union contract).

New guy's campaign for mayor??? Sometimes your comments are like reading chicken entrails...
