  1. "monumental change that will take place on November"

    What change are you expecting?

  2. Re-estasblishing the rule of law under the Constitution, for starters.

  3. "the rule of law"

Historically, it would be very unusual to have a president who narrows his powers.

Can you name one president who has rolled back his or her powers that were expanded by the previous president?

Please do not include Supreme Court cases.

Andrew Johnson, but that is about it.

  4. THAT's why it will such a big change.

So are you coming to the soiree or not? How will I know you?

  5. I think 'monumental change' is probably setting yourself up for disappointment. Congress isn't going to change their business as usual and that's where so much of the inaction on important issues like health care resides. But Barack will actually, I hope, prevent any more monumental change than we've already seen with the Supreme Court. I believe the Supremem Court is one of the most important reasons that he needs to win this race.

  6. I have a couple of reactions. First a small request, I don't know if I am carrying on one dialogue or two or three. It would be helpful if anonymous commenters would at least sign a name.

Second, the phrase 'monumental change' is used in the context of a campaign announcement (which I posted but did not author), so a little hyperbole is to be expected.

Third, I agree with much of your comment. I would add the fact that Obama is a 'man of color' will truly be a monumental change, one that I never thought I would see in my lifetime.

Going back to an earlier comment about Presidents not surrendering power, I agree generally, but: 1. Gerald Ford did not have his own internal spy group like Nixon did; 2. Thomas Jefferson did not use the Alien and Sedition Acts as the regrettable John Adams did. Adams used the law to imprison his political enemies.

A couple specifics: I hope Obama will eliminate the use of torture, will reduce the use of Presidential signing statements to more or less nullify Congressional enactments, will be far more favorable to the environment, and will make progress on health care. That's a partial list.

Will the rich and powerful be tossed out of K Street? Mmmm, no.

  7. to Anon - I'd rather be disappointed by someone I don't know than have my negative feelings confirmed by someone I do. I know McCain is going to continue the Bush legacy of more war, more abuse of power, and less respect for the Constitution. I'd rather support Obama and give him the benefit of doubt until he at least proves me wrong...

Really? You would be one of the few that I know. You have never heard of Judas?

  9. Wha-huh?

Judas did know Jesus and that didn't work too well, in an earthly sense at least.
