Obligatory Favre Post

So Brett Favre may want to un-retire. Not terribly suprising - except for the embarrassment of undoing the world-class hanky honker that was his retirement announcement - super star athletes rarely "go out on top".

And why should they? They play first and foremost for their own gratification. And they do it extremely well, are compensated with riches to embarrass a sultan, and have adoring fans schlurping all over. By now Brett has noticed the lack of grass-mowing fandom - and his John Deere execution really isn't that much better than the Bubba next door.

Would anyone be happier than John Madden?

What is perplexing to me is why the Packers would hesitate to embrace his return. Let's recap. Favre was not just one of the great all-time quarterbacks, he was one of the top QB's last year. He was 6th in the QB rating, 4th in passing yards, and tied for 6th in TD passes. That's in 2007.

Schefter: Favre holds the power

Particularly amusing is the chest-thumping of some Wisconsin sports journalists urging the Packers to play hard ball. Huh? First of all, the football beat writers should be thanking Favre for getting them some column inches in July. More to the point, does anyone really think the Packers would be better off this September with Favre retiring his jersey and Aaron 'Shut Your Mouth' Rodgers at the helm? Or worse yet, watching Favre quarterbacking another team while Rodgers flounders (the guy will be a near-rookie and the league eats rookies). Hmm, now which team really needs a quarterback?

Check out this list and tell me Favre isn't better today at age 97 than all of these guys put together: Chicago Bears Quarterbacks.

This Bears fan seemed pretty happy that Favre was done:

OK, so it's upsetting some plans and requiring rearrangement of the furniture and maybe some people are bored by the soap opera aspect, but my gosh, get Brett on a plane to Green Bay now.

What do you think? Do you want Favre to come back? Should the Packers accept him or cut him?

  3. really, this whole discussion is so 90s.

Do you not understand that the whole world is talking brewers.

    Packers?
    Farver, who?

The guy was a cowboy and we all would have been better served by trading him for a medicore qb and some good dlinemen.

This recipe works c Ravens, Tampa Bay and the list goes on...

    Again, Farcver, who?
