Stepping Out

Last week, I began the path of The Natural Step by attending my first Study Circle meeting sponsored by. See Summer Study Circles! on the updated web site of The Natural Step Monona.

I was looking forward to meeting some new folks and especially soem new Mononans and whom do I meet there? Some old friends: Peter McKeever (You can read some articles by Peter here: Fighting Bob - Articles, but my favorite is: Three-minute democracy [10/20/05].], Marena Kehl (Peter's spouse), Mary Possin, John Disch (aka Mr. Clean), and Heather Gates. Some new faces (to me): A guy who only goes by 'My Name Is Lee' - I thought the was in the wrong meeting for a minute - Just kidding, Lee is Lee Rayburn of The Mic and a Monona resident; also Monona resident and performance artist Dianne' Aldrich (Down to earth - Isthmus The Daily Page) and three other folks who haven't answered my email about blogging with their names yet!

The study circle has nine meetings plus (or including?) a couple potlucks and basically pursues the idea of sustainability and how we integrate into the life of the community, in particular city government, but our daily lives as well. We had a lively and interesting discussion last night. The whole concept of study circles is fascinating - a ground up, brick-by-brick community-building effort. Alder Bob Miller is a 'graduate'. City planner Paul Kachlemaier is currently in another study circle.

Couple points from last night: Sustainability is not just about the environment, but also includes social and economic aspects. And best definition of sustainability: Something you can do over and over and over without negative effects.

I've never talked to anyone that regretted doing a study circle. Sign up for the next round.

And kudos to Heather Gates who just keeps bringing it.

  1. Appears to be too much like a religion.

  2. I don't see it. Maybe an ethical system, but not necessarily that.

Care to expand on your thought?

  3. well, i did not post the above....but if I were to guess what the poster meant.....

folks, we talk about how to be better stewards of the world and tell us how to be better stewards, but they themselve can not walk the rope they laid down.

Now, this is not bad or good...just needs to be noted...

  4. From Heather Gates:

"The Natural Step (TNS) is a science-based framework for sustainability. It has robust principles within which an organization, municipality, business, or individual can design a path to sustainability.

Could Anonymous Number One expand on what they think appears to be too much like a religion in TNS? I certainly wouldn't want our group to be viewed that way.

And I can't say I understand you, Anonymous Two. Did you mean that because there is hypocrisy in religion and because there are those touting sustainability who aren't 100% sustainable, therefore those who tout sustainability are religious? I just want to make sure I understand you."

    Thanks for asking...no really.

Ok, let me use my mother-in-law ....a good target...lol....he he.

She likes to come to my house and stay for 2 or 3 days. Any longer and I am calling the Monona PD and have her forcibly removed...I think she knows that though.

While she is there she criticizes me...for not being as good as a recycler as I should be and a whole host of other things.

Now, I will take that---but I have reasons (tell you another day).

YET, she leaves my front door and backdoor open in the dead of winter and in the dog days of summer....leaves lights on in the middle the afternoon, leaves the TV skawing and while not watching.

We all do what we can do....we should all try to do more... andsome do more then others, but it is best NOT to critizes others till you have your own life straight AND do not force me to do something that I am not ready to do ....cause I am appt to point that you/she is living in a glass house.

(I am not poking you...here but that was my point around the water bottle...sorry..I c you have changed.)

thorny crown and do not tread on me...come to mind.

Sometimes, it works the same way with religion...people who have drank the cool-aid are apt to be the biggest fans....and abusers while thinking the other guy is the problem....

Does it mean you throw it out....no...

Have a good fourth and if you are at the beer tent the first one is on me!
