Addendum May 30, 2008: After some reportedly spirited discussion, the Monona ad hoc smoking ban committee recommended adoption of a comprehnesive smoking ban ordiancne effective June 1, 2009 by a 6-0 vote last night.
In case you missed the news:
"Mayor Robb Kahl and a citizens' group both said today that June 2009 is acceptable. Kahl had wanted the ban to start in 2010 and Breath Free Monona had been pushing for November 2008."
Deal would ban smoking in Monona in 2009
Not everyone is happy; in fact, everyone is at least a little unhappy - almost always a sign of a good compromise. Kudos to the Mayor and the Breathe Free leadership.

ReplyDelete'cept adding the skate park would be nice.
Monona Council,
ReplyDeleteI ask you to enact an ordinance which immediately bans the use of tobacco products in public places in Monona. The concern for Public Health is a fundamental obligation of any municipality and tobacco is held by science, by medicine, and by those who take their studies seriously to be a serious threat to public health.
The city also has the responsibility to provide good schools to the families of the city and that those schools provide good health training and education. Medical Schools, Science Department at reputable Colleges and Universities, Public Health Agencies of the Federal Government hold that tobacco products are causes of cancers and other related diseases.
Citizens are taxpayers who must fund the insurance costs of city employees and that those premiums reflect great expenses related to tobacco use. As buyers of private insurance the premiums of medical insurance have risen due to tobacco usage.
I find it unreasonable to use assertions by businesses that depend on tobacco use for their incomes to deflect the city from its duty to protect the health of its citizens from the use of tobacco products. Any comments about road construction is totally unrelated to the public’s need for protection from the threat of disease caused by tobacco usage.
Please consider your responsibilities for the public health in Monona and the urgent need to educate the public to the inherent dangers of the use of tobacco. An ordinance educates he citizenry and reinforces the schools efforts to teach youngsters about the danger of starting to smoke.
