Did you know you can check out a portable energy meter (PEM) from your local library?
To borrow one in this area go to the online catalog at South Central Library System and enter "portable energy meter" in the 'Title key words' box. The Watt's Up PEM is the newer one. There is currently a very short waiting list.
Get one and then check out how much energy your various TV's, appliances and whatnot are using. Try turning your cable box on and off to see how the usage changes (almost none) or the DVD player (adds 5 watts). Or how much it costs just to have a TV plugged in.
I'll be playing it around with it over the next two weeks and reporting my findings (now THAT should really drive up my hits).
