Should the use of cell phones and laptops be regulated in the library? Ring tones, bootup tones...,the usually louder voices on cell phone conversations? Should signs be posted requesting civil use of such instruments?
Q: What's going on with the building inspector and the decision whether or not to hire our own or continue to go with the contracted gun for hire."
A: Hey, you left out the question mark! How am I supposed to know if it's a question if you don't use question marks.
Anyway....city staff is developing a job description and conducting a salary survey of other municipalities. Once those are complete we can move forward.
Q: Should the use of cell phones and laptops be regulated in the library? Ring tones, bootup tones...,the usually louder voices on cell phone conversations? Should signs be posted requesting civil use of such instruments?
A: I believe the Library Board is going to discuss these issues at the meeting on April 15.
I'm wondering if other people are bothered by excess noise in the library.
(I generally come in and pick up materials and don't stay there to read - I haven't noticed a lot of noise, but I'm not really attuned to it).
What is the update on the Shelter? Did we get all that we paid for, or are we still in negotiation? Is it able to be used all year, and is it open this summer? What is up with all of that?
This is a GREAT idea! My neighbors already have chickens, we met the new chicks they just got last week - right here in Monona. I bet this idea will catch on in NO time in Monona.
Maywood would be an excellent place for redevelopment. I bet you could get 20 nice residential units on the land. I would think the city would jump at the chance. Nichols is much less saleable - use that for a school.
See, that's the problem in Monona. People would rather complain and point fingers than DO something to improve our community. You want a local k-8 school? Guess what. Wisconsin law provides for charter schools. There are even grants to help get going. What could be mor attractive to a young family than an innovative charter school? Spanish immersion? Core knowledge? Pick one. Do the research. Put the energy that has gone into complaining into action.
Let me understand, making a joke about chickens and....and then someone makeing the next joke about chicken coops.....and then someone commented that Monona Doug does not look to talk about school is acting like donkey?
please.
I was interested in the chicken rules-that thing is fox proof-you know.
OK, sorry. But accusing Doug of being anti-community schools does seem like an insult. Gotta be careful with humor in writing because it is difficult to discern sarcasm if the people don't know each other.
Because deep, meaningful dialogue doesn't occur in a personal, anonymous manner. A blog like this can be used to post ideas and information, but I don't think it works well for dialogue. That should happen in person and there is far too little of it in our community. We tend to stay in our camps with people who think like we do. Occasionally, when hot button issues arise, the camps butt heads. Then we withdraw to celebrate our success or mourn our loss, and assume that those with whom we disagree possess flawed character. The seeking of true understanding is sorely missing from the public discourse. To be sure, there are those who rise above this. Heather Gates and Bob Miller are two such individuals and they have accomplished it by actively seeking to interact with a wide variety of people in our community. We need more leadership like this.
"Q: What is the update on the Shelter? Did we get all that we paid for, or are we still in negotiation? Is it able to be used all year, and is it open this summer? What is up with all of that?"
A: The shelter will be opned in mid-April and is rented for summer and fall. The issue with the architect has not been resolved, but progress has been made. The shelter apparently can be made energy code compliant for winter use without big changes, but the city needs to do more investigation of that.
Resolution of the issue has been slowed because both sides have lawyered up. The architect and their lawyer have been slow to respond to the city's lawyer. Hopefully the issue will be resolved and fixed by next winter.
Call the city building inspector with your chicken questions. He has a better incomprehension of our ordinances and codes than anyone else at city hall.
And certainly there should be a prominent sign asking cell phone users to silence their phones and take their conversatons outside. People who bring laptops should be similarly reminded to silence their speakers.
There is no city building inspector. So, that won't work. Maybe I should act now and beg forgiveness later since no one can answer my questions? I might miss the free shipping incentive if I don't act soon.
A: That's not really a question, but I don't post everyday and I'm not going to be responding to every comment. I also will reserve the right to delete comments that I know to be false.
I've never given much thought to the chicken issue. Wasn't that comment supposed to be a joke?
Maywood School isn't for sale. Maywood and Winnequah are going to share a principal. Link to story below.

It seems to me there is a lot of interest in 'discussing' school issues. Maybe one of you should start your own blog. One of purposes in having this blog is to provide info on city issues - stuff that I personally know about bcause I'm on city council. I just don't have that info on school issues.
If you go to the city of Monona website, click on the pdf file of ordinances, go to page 107, it looks like you're o.k. to keep chickens as long as the noise isn't disturbing anyone. So no roosters!
Yes, there is a building inspector. Right now the service is contracted. The mayor proposed going to an in-house inspector. We are in the process of moving that way.
so you can't have pets that lay eggs? do you suppose we can ask the council to consider this without being accused of being the "21st alderman district of Madison?"
Well.....if we want to build a sustainable Monona....then lets get going-as I see little that is not sustainable about CHICKENS!
I just do not understand the rational of not being able to keep a couple young chicks for your morning omelet....and...the..chicks could be invited to the cook-out....if you get my drift.
In any case, the pack of dogs (3 or 4) that live next to me is more of public problem than the two laying hens that I have my eyes on.
Life, Liberty and fresh eggs
Thanks for the information-my plan to lower my food costs is officially on hold----

ReplyDeleteDug,
ReplyDeleteIs this type of thing possible/legal in Monona?

Just trying to make ends-meat.
This is a GREAT idea! My neighbors already have chickens, we met the new chicks they just got last week - right here in Monona. I bet this idea will catch on in NO time in Monona.
ReplyDeleteHow can we use a vacant Maywood to improve our city?
ReplyDeletecharter school - quit complaining and get to work.

ReplyDeleteWhy slam Doug? He just decided to have anonymous posts again. He gives you the opportunity to state your opinion and you act like an a**. nice.

ReplyDeletethe level of the blog has descended to Rush and Sly...
ReplyDeleteWhy?

ReplyDeleteThat meaningfuling dioulgue....happened a few times, but then Doug yelled at us.

I think we are need to start simple and build our way to bigger issues....the chicken did not come before the egg.
So, what about the chickens?
This qeuestion needs to be laid to rest-as madison can have fresh eggs. What about Mononona?

ReplyDelete"I just don't have that info on school issues."
ReplyDeleteDoug, are you choosing not to participate or research this particular issue?
You were very active and helpful with the middle school issue.
Q:'"I just don't have that info on school issues."
ReplyDeleteDoug, are you choosing not to participate or research this particular issue?'
A: What specific issue are you referring to?
My local focus with this blog is on city business not schools. You want a school blog, then start one.
There is too a building inspector, but the person is not a city employee. The services are contracted through a private firm, right Doug?
ReplyDeleteYes, there is a building inspector. Right now the service is contracted. The mayor proposed going to an in-house inspector. We are in the process of moving that way.
ReplyDeleteChickens. According to the building inspector they are verboten, see 13-1-80 (c)(4)a which prohibits agricultural uses except small gardens.

hmmm....what about elected officials that occasionally, um, lay an egg. Will we have to ban them too? ;)
ReplyDeleteI don;t about that, but I have a development that I would like to relate.
ReplyDeleteI have been contact by a Monona org....underground chickens.
The group has strong beliefs, but does not want to come out in open or get fenceed in, but they all have chickens.
Who knew?
Doug, do I join or work within the rules to change the rules? Thus, I would delay chicken producation until I get the rules changed.
Underground chickens? You mean like potatoes? Or like the Weather Underground?
ReplyDeleteMy advice: Don't be chicken-livered! Chickeneers of the world unite, you have nothing to lose, but your - uhh, chicken wire.
Yes, like the weatherman.
ReplyDeleteBefore Madison changed the law-there was a group....undground chickens No fooling.
