Candidates? Here's a Few (Another Addendum)

I received an email from Lisa jo VonAllmen today (12-12) saying she is running for Monona city council. Lisa jo has served on the city's Parks Board for several years and contributes a lot to the committee.

So far one (now two) candidate, Chad Speight, has announced his candidacy for the Monona city council and one incumbent, Peter McKeever, has announced his intention not to seek re-election.

Chad would be a strong addition to the council. He's a bright guy (Dartmouth grad), former history teacher, and with his wife Sue, he runs his own carpentry business that stresses restoration and green remodeling (http://www.chadscarpentry.com/). And he's a die-hard Brewers fan!

Here's an excerpt from an email Chad sent around recently:

"I am energized and excited. I truly believe that together, we can make Monona a better place for all of us, and for future families to live in. I am especially interested in promoting a more progressive Monona, with an emphasis on sustainability, taking care of our lakes, parks and our library, having the best transit system for us, and encouraging pedestrian and bicycle friendly streets. And I am beginning to understand the complexities of these issues within the context of our budgetary restraints. "

For the MG School Board, I hear that former MG teacher and Monona resident Sue Fox and CG resident Sharon Henes are running. Incumbent Kathy Bultman has announced she is not seeking re-election.

Robin Schmidt announced she is seeking election to the Dane County Board of Supervisors. Robin lost an extremely tight race the last time in a campaign that sort of got lost in the MG school referendum. Robin was instrumental in starting the Monona Farmers Market, is Secretary of Friends of the Monona Senior Center, and chairs the Dane County Environmental Council Home - Environmental Council - Dane County. No word from the incumbent yet.

Any other names out there? I am informed that Jill List from Cottage Grove is also running for MG School Board.

  1. I understand Dale Suslick's picture has been showing up on milk cartons in the City-County building. It would be nice if Monona sent someone to the County Board that was interested in showing up for work.

  2. Now, now, play nice.

I haven't checked his attendance lately, is it the same as this summer/fall?

The Environment, Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee - the committee Sup. Suslick is assigned to.

They've held 22 meetings in 2007. Dale's been to four of them.

  4. Doug-

Do you support women on the council? Peter seems to think this is important? Can you tell me why?

Or, Peter, if you read this blog, can you go into further detail on why you made that statement? I watch Monona politics with great interest. Women's opinions are lacking. Lots to be accomplished in our community. What do you think us WOMEN can accomplish?

  5. Chad Speight?? Are you kidding me??

  6. "Chad Speight?? Are you kidding me??"

OK, this is the kind of lame comment that makes me want to ban anonymous posts. It's insulting with no substance and adds nothing but nastiness to the conversation.

  7. "Do you support women on the council?"

Yes, I'd like to see more diversity on the council. People with different experiences bring different perspectives and gender is a big one. Age is another. Right now I am the youngest council member at age 50.

  8. How come you get all offended when someone makes a comment about someone you like, but you allow Dale to be consistently slandered here?

  9. Slander is an untruthful oral (spoken) statement about a person that harms the person's reputation or standing in the community.

  10. mmm..

Frankly, I find the comment about Dale more rude than the comment about Chad..

    No, they are both rude..

On an entirely different note-I heard the are a few more big names who are thinking about running for school board to the point where we had have a primary..

  11. who is jill list and why is that name familar?

  12. Jill List sits on the curriculum committee. She once voted to sell Nichols School. She also voted to increase class sizes in Monona schools.

  13. When was there a vote taken to increase class sizes in Monona Schools?

  14. I do not know Jill List, but I am informed that some of the things said about her in one of the comments above are untrue.

  15. Can you tell us what isn't true?

  16. From the Annual meeting of the MG 2005 minutes.

    XVIII. Other Business
Frank Salvi, 4363 Damascus Trail, Cottage Grove, moved that authorization be given to the Board of Education
to sell the Nichols School property. Jill List, 4370 Citation Court, Cottage Grove, seconded the motion.

  17. Looks true to me.

  18. "Looks true to me."

Well, gee, AnonyMouse thanks for that very useful contribution. Now we that an anonymous person thinks that something, presumably about Jill List 'voting' to sell Nichols School, is true. Spend a lot of time working on that, did you?

I will be posting Jill List in her words later today. For now, I can point out that neither she nor anyone else 'voted' to sell Nichols School (only the school board can do that). Her commenst address this in more detail.

She's on the Policy and Personnel Committee not Curriculum. She did not vote to increase class size. She supported maintaining current policy on class size.

  19. Nope. Not a lot of hard work at all. Easy to remember folks who want to take away your neighborhood schools.

  20. When will every election in Monona stop being "Ground Hog Day" for the school referendum that happened, like, two years ago? Are we really so spoiled and entitled that we can't get over not having everything exactly as we would like? Sometimes you don't get your way. When you don't, you pick yourself up, dust yourself off and move on. Mature adults understand that your opponent on one issue may be your ally on the next. If you don't get that, you paint yourself into a very tiny, boring corner and before long your little group of like-minded friends is so tiny, that you become irrelevant. Both Monona and the school district that we are part of needs to look forward. There are problems looming on many fronts. Lets hear from candidates about how they will handle some of those!

  21. I guess I should add that "Ground Hog Day" is a movie starring Bill Murray where he wakes up each day only to relive the previous day over and over again until he comes to grip with his narcissism and is able to move on.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I do not want to relive it for sure.

However, I recall Jill encouraging Monona folks to move to CG (just this summer) and enjoy a new school middle school, taylor Prairie and help them build a new el school, which they need.

    So-who is doing the reliving?
