The Monona city council and the Mayor's ad hoc advisory committee concluded the interview this past weekend. We had a very good pool of finalists - they were stronger in person than on paper and video. An excellent candidate has been offered and accepted the position, but it all remains tentative and conditional pending conclusion of the formalities. The council will take a final vote next Monday.
As is our wont in Monona, we had an extraordinarily thorough process that included not just the council but an excellent advisory committee as well. We met July 9th set the salary range and finalize the wording of the job announcement. We then met again on August 22 to winnow the 38 applications down to 10 or 11. On September 6, we met and selected three finalists.
Finally, on Friday (09-21) the candidates met with staff in the afternoon and then attended a meet-and-greet drinks and horse divers Friday evening at the Community Center with the council and search committee. Formal interviews took up all of Saturday morning. A 'secret' ballot revealed total agreement on the rankings by the council and search committee.
We are all really looking forward to welcoming the new administrator.
Perhaps my primary purpose in writing this blog, at least as it relates to city matters, is to provide up-to-date information on council and city government happenings. I try to call them as I see them and avoid rancor - not always successfully I know. I strive to follow Council President Thomas' phrase, to "disagree agreeably". Politics is politics and we will disagree from time-to-time (and yes, it is politics because we decide 'who gets how much of what'). Anyway, this is all prelude to the news that I feel I have to report or I might as well hang up the keyboard: Alder Suslick did not attend any of the search meetings listed. His absence on Friday and Saturday was noticed by all and not favorably.

Maybe Dale just decided to trust the search committee? I dunno, but he's got some explaining to do. Dale?
ReplyDeletePerhaps, he heard about the weapons screening>
ReplyDeleteThey may complain about Suslick, but "ahem" would rather have him elected to County Board and City Council than a "frightening" stranger.
ReplyDeleteIsn't his wife a Monona native.
So, he doesn't have to show up, or do much of anything.
Not a Suslick fan, but the comment about having to be a native is not valid. Wiswell, the ultimate native son, was tossed in favor of non-native Bob Miller, and I don't think Wood, McKeever or Kugle are natives either. Not to say you don't have to cozy up to the native crowd to get elected, because it sure helps, but I doubt Monona is unique among small towns in that regard.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Dale is having a family or personal issue going on, but he was MIA last night too. He needs to be more public about his lack of engagement or resign so someone who wants to do the work can take his place.
