Natural Step Monona Meeting REMINDER

The Natural Step Meeting is this Tuesday.

The Natural Step Monona will hold an event to explore sustainability at the Monona Community Center 1011 Nichols Road on Tuesday, September 11 beginning at 6:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.

The first half-hour will give you a chance to browse displays from a variety of groups like Dane County Buy Local Initiative, Aldo Leopold Nature Center, the Monona Public Library, Sustain Dane, The Natural Step Monona and the Madison Area Municipal Storm Water Partnership. A series of speakers will be on from 7-8 p.m. and the Marketplace of Ideas will be open until 9 p.m.

TNS Monona is a group of local folks doing some really good work (including sale of compost bins and rain barrels, study groups and workshops). Please drop by the community center and see what it's all about.

  1. I don't know a lot about it, but this seems like a great thing for Monona. Especially with the lakes and all of the shorelines, we really need to have a lot of folks involved in environmental issues and making Monona more sustainable. I hope folks show up for this event.

  2. The city of Monona should step up on this kind of thing. Status quo is not helping our city to be a place that is attractive or sustainable.

I say more power to those who are trying to improve our city. I will go to this thing and take a few friends, too. Anyone who reads this should do the same. It is our responsibility, too, to change for the better. I'll go see what I can learn.

  5. Yes, in June the council approved an ad hoc sustainability committee to recommend practices and policies for the city to follow. The mayor has not appointed the committee yet.

  6. Question: "any info about the effect of so many water bottles being used on the environment? or the the effects of leaching from reuse has on people..or do they print those warnings for nothing?"

OK. I've seen the light and am swearing off 'bottled water' and buying a reusable water container. Now, when are you giving up bottled soda and beer?

I don't think I've ever seen such a warning label - methinks my leg is being pulled.

  8. I see we are on the same frequency Kenneth.

I am want to give-up those things-but we just need to have beer and soda on tap downtown and have people bring buckets to fill or growlers like the old days-imagine a new happy community. Tax the crap out of it and outlaw bottles.
    Heck, rezone the new shelter.

I mean you are correct, but what is the alteratives to those things?

In a society that (sadly) depends on Multi National Corp since the William Jennings Bryan elecation of 1896. Then those corp are selling us a bill of goods that is not good long term for the good of the community.

  9. Wow! Dan Rather and William Jennings Bryan in one post. Your cultural references may be more out of date than mine!

Alternatives? Maybe we could use the extra water tower for a City beer tower....
