Hit Lake Monona in my kayak for the first time this year about 8:30 a.m. A little brisk, but I stayed upright so it was a good paddle. I like to put in at the end of Winnequah Trail and paddle through the canals to the Bay That Shall Not Be Named. There's a little channel just south of Frost Woods Beach and I saw at least 40 turtles sunning on downed trees - I think they were midland painted turtles.
I also saw some mallards - birds not the baseball team.
It's a good time to get out on Lake Monona and the bay before the milfoil and other junk gets too thick.

What are your favorite places in the area to paddle?
Of course, S**** Bay
ReplyDeleteCherokee Marsh
Kickapoo River
Where do you put in for Cherokee Marsh?
ReplyDeleteWhat did you use on the Kickapoo? Canoe? Kayak? What length?
Cherokee Marsh: There's a launch on School Rd, beyond where it crosses Wheeler Rd.
ReplyDeleteKickapoo: We kayak. We pay one one of the rental places (Titanic or Mr Duck) for a shuttle. When it's not busy, they'll let you drive your car to where you want to end. We like bridge 5, it's one or two bridges past Wildcat Mt.
After a day of paddling, we like to eat at the Rockton Bar. It's between Ontario and La Farge.
I forgot to mention Lake Wingra.
