The Monona city council had its organizing meeting this week - swore in the newly elected/re-elected members, elected a council president, accepted committee assignments, and agreed on a tentative meeting scheulde.
My committees are Mass Transit (co-chair), Parks (chair), License & Review (chair), and Library Board. The only change was a trade of Public Works for Mass Transit. I was OK with the change. I've never served on mass transit before.
Kathy Thomas was re-elected as council president over Peter McKeever 3-2 (Alder Kugle missed the meeting). Nothing at all against Kathy, I just thought that peter should have a chance to be president - it's mostly an honorary position anyway and Kathy will now have been president four consecutive years.
The only real surprising appointment was Bob Miller to Finance and Personnel. I'm confident he will do just fine, but that's a tough committee for the new guy.
Public Safety is now going to be overseeing building inspections - previously no committee really oversaw that department. A second council member was added as well as a another public member to make a total of 9 members.
Other appointments:
Suslick: Public Safety, Mass Transit, Ad Hoc Flood Mitigation, and Ad Hoc Monona Drive
Thomas: Public Safety, Finance and Personnel, Parks, Ad Hoc Family Retention, & Plan
McKeever: Public Works, Seniors, CDA, Zoning
Kugle: Public Works, Plan, Ad Hoc Flood Mitigation, and Ad Hoc Family Retention
Miller: Finance and Personnel, CDA, Broadband Telecommunications, and Ad Hoc Monona Drive
