The Parks Board approved a refined kayak/canoe rack policy this week. The council referred the policy back to the Parks Board to consider a few issues, such as location, availability to non-residents, and fees. The general idea is to put racks in several waterfront parks that could be leased on an annual basis, which is very attractive to those of us with kayaks or canoes - schlepping the thing around on top of the car gets old quick.
The Parks Board recommended a $60 fee for residents (down from $75) and $150 for non-residents (up from $145). However, residents will be given a one-month head start on reserving the racks. The Board selected Frost Woods Beach Park (a rack with space for 4 boats open only to Monona residents), Schluter Beach Park (6), and Lottes Park (6). We considered and rejected Winnequah Park, Tonyawatha Boat Landing Park, and Graham Park either because of small size of the park or difficulty of access to the water.
The city council will make the final decision.
