The grossly over-rated Marquette Basketball Team has pulled off another remarkable feat by insulting George Thompson, their all-time leading scorer, first big-time Al McGuire recruit, and team radio announcer for over a quarter century. The athletic department (using the term 'athletic' broadly) pulled a magic trick by deciding that Big George's number 24 wasn't really retired back in 1969 after all. Freshman Lazar Hayward has been wearing #24 this year, until Thompson objected.
Huh? Nope, according to an MU press flack, the school only retires jerseys not numbers. I've been following sports for 40 years and never heard that one before. You retire the number not the jersey. What would it mean to retire a jersey anyway? MU finally removed their from their backside and Hayward will be wearing #32 from now on. But, really, nice work guys and keep up the good work.
Go Badgers.
