From my perspective yesterday's election was the most important mid-term election in my lifetime. Checks and Balances desperately needed to be restored to our constitutional system. Secondarily, our election system desperately needed to perform in a way to restore confidence. The Dems took control of the US House back after 12 years out of power. A Check has been restored. The election system appears to have performed well.
Democrats have gained at least 28 seats at this point according to CNN. However, they also show 13 races still undecided. There were some excruciatingly close results, so the final number may change by a seat or two in recounts. No Democrat lost. John Gard lost in NE Wisconsin - downside: he'll now live openly in Sun Prairie. Longtime GOP moderate Jim Leach lost in Iowa - and wasn't on many lists as being endangered. Wyoming - huh? - is still out this morning.
Democrats also gained 4 seats in the US Senate, losing none and picking up seats in Missouri, Ohio, PA., and Rhode Island. Final call is still out in Montana and Virginia - recounts are coming in those states, but Democrats start those as the leaders.
Couple of interesting referendum outcomes. The Marriage Ban passed by a comfortable margin - a sad blot on the day. In Missouri the stem cell research was approved by the voters! Thank you Michael J. Fox.
Closer to home, Jim Doyle won handily, Kathleen Falk lost for AG. Looks like angry Dems in Dane County cost her the race. Maybe there are other factors, but Doyle outpolled Falk in Dane County by some 25,000 votes. Falk has (apparently) lost by slightly less than 9,000 votes statewide. I did vote for Falk, but without enthusiasm. Her opportunism in attacking Lautenschlager was unseemly at best.
Dem Joe Parisi won another term as my state representative beating perennial Loser Dennis Lang..Denny Long...Dan Lang...no wait, Dan Long. Ever heard of Harold Stassen
The Dems also took control of the Wisconsin state senate, which could be the biggest news of the night for me personally.

It is good to see that Monona reflected the good sense to vote against the 'sacred marriage' amendment and against the 'kill'em amendment'. Perhaps a referendum on secession would be in order...here in Monona sanctuary will be given for civil unions and non-traditional marriages, with the Monona Oaks folks and Bishop Morlino followers guaranteed that their bigotry is also protected.
ReplyDeleteMajority rules in Monona!
Speaking of the perenial candidate Dan Long... it hardly seems fair...Alderman/Supervisor/soon to be Mayor? Suslick has so many roles and poor Republican Dan can't seem to get elected...Does Monona have a dogcatcher?
