Mayor Bob sent along these two photos. He knows I am a huge fan of the late author J.G. Farrell, who drowned at the spot shown in in 1979. Farrell authored a smashing trilogy on the British Empire. As described on the NYRB Classics website:
THE SIEGE OF KRISHNAPUR
Introduction by Pankaj Mishra
Farrell’s Booker Prize winning novel takes place in India in 1857, the year of the Great Mutiny.
TROUBLES
Introduction by John Banville
It’s 1919 and Ireland is experiencing the mounting violence of “the troubles” while outside the order of the British Empire totters. Troubles was recently awarded the “Lost” Booker Prize.
THE SINGAPORE GRIP
Introduction by Derek Mahon
It’s 1939, and the eve of World War II, in this novel that is a love story and a war story as well as a tragicomic tale of a city under siege and a dying way of life.
