It's been awhile, so here's your chance to ask a question. Go ahead. Somebody out there may even have an answer - oh, wait that's my job. Questions related to Monona are likely to get more accurate answers than most other stuff.

Rumor Mill states that Phase II of Monona drive will be asphalt and not concrete. Apparently Madison is not willing to pay the extra money for concrete. Is this true?
ReplyDeleteIn my humble opinion asphalt will not hold up over the years and there will be ruts in the road. Putting asphalt down is a horrible idea and will be a mistake.
Can we have a referendum on the emerald ash borer? Or a referendum on the color of air? The voters need to be heard on these important subjects.
ReplyDeleteWhen might we see the removal of the excess signage and policing of lower Winnebago Squaw Road? Or, perchance, the equal application of the law to the rest of the Road?

First part is true, the second part is not quite. On federal-aid projects (like Monona Drive) a pavement design report is performed to evaluate the life cycle costs of pavement options. For phase two the report shows that asphalt has a lower life cycle cost by about $200,000.
Dane County and Madison aren't willing to pay more for concrete because the PDR recommends asphalt.
Asphalt can be replaced much more easily and completely than concrete (witness the stretch of Monona Drive around the high school and Rocky's). Once concrete goes bad, it is much more difficult to fix.
Asphalt you can grind off the top layers and put down a new layer and have a very nice road. Problem is you end up doing it more often (with consequent disruption of traffic).

ReplyDeleteSomeone dumped fresh concrete in the woods behind frost woods baseball field. Last week you can see where someone backed up a trailer or a truck into the woods. You could really see it last week, it is slightly hidden by the leaves today. I called Marty (city inspector) he was very kind and said he would look into it. Is there anything else I can do besides putting up a sign in the park that says you suck-Clean up your damn mess?
