Restrictions For Monona Festival & Fireworks Display

[Begin Press Release from the Monona Police Department:]

Restrictions for the July, 2010 Monona Festival & Fireworks display:

--no personal fireworks of any kind are allowed in Winnequah Park or any City property adjacent to Winnequah Park.

--only alcohol purchased at the Festival may be consumed in Winnequah park on July 2, 3 and 4, 2010.

--no personal grills will be allowed in the park the evening of the Fireworks display on July 4, 2010.

--Healy Lane and portions of Nichols Road will be barricaded or have parking restrictions during the festival.

--the parking lot behind Winnequah Elementary school will be posted for no parking starting at 4:00 pm on July 4, 2010. Vehicles in this lot after 4:00 pm on July 4, 2010 will be ticketed and/or towed. Towing will be at the expense of the registered owner of the vehicle.

Due to road construction we are encouraging those who will be attending the fireworks display to walk or ride bikes. For those who must drive please be aware that it will take time and patience to move traffic out of the area after the fireworks display has ended.

The Monona Police Department is asking for the cooperation of all who attend, as we want you to have a safe and enjoyable time while at the Monona Festival. Thank you all for your cooperation.

For general information related to private use of fireworks please go to mymonona.com. As a guide, anything that flies or explodes is illegal.

[end of press release]

Hmm, I know I've broken at least a couple of those rules in the past - as do many people attending the fireworks - by bringing a couple beers and a few 'presonal' fireworks to shoot off while waiting for the real show to start. [I have got to quit confessing to (albeit past) law breaking...].

  1. How about "Cheers" and we all tip a pint O Guinness mate! They can't send us all to the pokey, or could they? This isn't Cottage Grove! Think of all the revenue, we could buy more stop signs, and perhaps set a record for the most stop signs per capita. One sign for every man, woman, and child. I think our fireworks and festival are first rate, and so is our country when we wanna be. Happy Birthday USA!!!
Hey, we could shout "Happy Birthday" or "Raffle Ticket" Remember to buy one you all.

  2. Me thinks your "confessing" has barely scratched the surface, particularly as it pertains to the early years.

  3. Re: no parking in the Winnequah lot - does this include the upper lot off of Greenway? Every year, a few people who park in that lot try to drive out and up Greenway while thousands of pedestrians are walking up Greenway. Some of the drivers get aggressive and start to nose their cars among the pedestrians. It is an accident waiting to happen. could the PD close that lot too? (and yes, I've suggested this to the PD)

  4. From the wording of the press release I would say that upper parking lot will be open. I would doubt that the parking restrictions will change at this late date for 2010. I suggest making a brief appearance at a Public Safety Commission meeting.

Traffic is bad and drivers get pushy on all roads near the park - I walk through the section of Winnequah Road by the Baskerville and Winn. Trail intersections and it is a hairy mess.

It should also be interesting watching traffic back up on lower Winnequah from the new stop signs.
