Monona City Council Preview - November 2

The Monona city council will take up the proposed operating budget for a first reading tonight. See my previous post: Budget Snoozer

The council will also take up a second reading the proposed consolidation of the part-time volunteer fire chief and the full-time EMS Director/Fire Marshall positions into a full-time fire chief. The Public Safety Committee recommended approval and participants at the Mayor's listening session also supported the proposal.

A question remains as to whether additional personnel will be needed to perform all the tasks performed by the two positions. That question does not necessarily need to be answered before a vote on the proposal, as long as people are cognizant that it may take some additional money.

The city council will also consider the proposed parks naming policy. The policy establishes a process and guidelines when a name is proposed for park or park facility.

The council will take a first reading of the proposed declaration of a blighted area for Redevelopment Project Area No. 7. The area runs along the west side of Monona drive and extends essentially from Winnequah Road to Dean Avenue (includes one parcel on the south side of Dean at Monona Drive).

Due to technical issues the packet for this week's council meeting have not been posted yet.

c. Consideration of Resolution 09-10-1653 Establishing a Policy for the Naming of Parks and Park Facilities (Park and Recreation Director).

  1. Not sure if this is the correct place for this, but what exactly does:

"Resolution 09-11-1666: Declaring Redevelopment Project Area No. 7 a Blighted Area*"

entail? Money? Additional enforcement of code violations? Additional resources from the state? Does it allow the city to confiscate abandoned property more easily?

This area is definitely in need of some attention and I'm happy to see it receiving it...
