Passing along a message from city engineer Rich Vela and the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District. You may also see MMSD sewage trucks operating on the north end of Winnequah Road and Coldspring Avenue. Don't run into those trucks. They will be temporarily hauling sewage from the site of the breakage to another sewer 'downstream' pipe down to another:
The Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District will be repairing the damaged sewage pressure pipe on Monona Drive beginning Wednesday morning, January 28. Monona Drive will be closed to all traffic between Cottage Grove Road and Buckeye Road from 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday through Friday evening. Drivers are encouraged to avoid this area during this time.
To facilitate the pipe repair, residents and businesses in the area bounded by Lake Monona on the west, Highway 30 on the north, Interstate Highway 90 on the east, and Buckeye Road on the south are asked to minimize their water use from 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday until 6:00 a.m. on Thursday. During this time the District will not be able to use the pumping facility that serves this area and will be handling all sewage from this area using portable pumps, semi-trucks and tank trailers. By reducing water use during this time, there will be less chance that sewage will back up into basements or overflow to Lake Monona.
The damage to this pipe occurred on January 22, and a temporary repair was made at that time. The District ordered and received repair parts for the pipe, and contractors and employees from the City of Madison and the District have developed a plan to complete the permanent repairs. Preliminary work will begin Wednesday morning. The pipe is expected to be back in service early Thursday morning, and the Monona Drive roadway should be repaired and open to traffic by Friday evening.
