A report from City Engineer Rich Vela relaying how the Dane County Highway Department process for patching Monona Drive:
Fill the hole with cold mix asphalt, leaving approximately ½ inch from the top of the hole.
Seal the patch using a hot asphaltic emulsion.
Placement of sand and/or fine limestone gravel chips on top of the sealant to prevent tracking of the sealant by automobiles as well as providing a slightly abrasive (non-slippery) surface to the patch.
Once the stretch of road is completed, the County will evaluate the amount of excess sand and/ gravel chips that may be present in the gutters and will clean up such excess material as necessary.
These are temporary patches. Permanent patches would involve removing the bad sections of the road pavement and placing a full-depth concrete or asphalt patch.
The potholes are even worse in Cape Town, South Africa.
