1. The Mayor should appoint a committee that can actually accomplish something. Yup. Not a committee that will be squashed because their suggestions aren't politically popular........hmmmm.......can you think of a committee Monona has where this applies?
2. The School Board should remember that even though they are charged with representing EVERY student, that doesn't excuse them from representing MONONA students. Yes, Monona students deserve principals.
3. Winnequah Road still has problems. The dips and divets still aren't fixed. Check out the large sink hole at the intersection of Winnequah and Maywood that turns into a large pond with each snow melt or rain fall. Fix our road!
4. Parks with goose poop. Fix the goose poop problem, please. I know many talented hunters. Soccer children and coaches alike will thank you for decades.
5. Nichols School. RENT IT OUT!!! Let's offset our budget deficits with smart business - let other people pay our bills..........yes, renters!!
6. Coldspring.......if you aren't going to rent those houses......SELL THEM!!! Where is the business common sense??
7. Chickens should be legal. My god. We are in a recession!!!
8. Walmart. Walmart rocks!! What else can we attract to that underutilized area?
9. Trolley.....just had to throw that in, because you KNOW Chad is thinking about what his big first SPLASH as a Monona Alderman might be....
10. Da Da Ta DA!!!!!!!! And for number TEN.........please do tell?!?!?! WHICH PROGRESSIVE intends to run for Mayor next year? The electorate can hardly wait!
Thanks in advance for publishing this, even though you reserve the right to totally get rid of it and deny it's very existence before it ever reaches the public purview.......
The public thanks you in advance. AND, please respond to each item by number, so that we can track threads!!
Very nice, he wrote sincerely. You should start a blog or something.
#1. Yes, pretty much all the standing committees get stuff done. (e.g., Public Works, Parks, etc.). I do think we appoint too many ad hoc committees. And I think the smoking ban committee is going to get the job done.
#3 Winnequah Road is going to have the dips taken out this year.
#4 We are working on the geese problem. My expectations are not real high - so many geese - but see my posts on this subject under 'parks'.
And I'm not responding to all 10 because I'm catching up on the Wire. Sorry.
DOUG!! Oh, how you disappoint! Catching up on the wire? You can't come up with anything more original than that?
The public deserves your answers!
Each of the numbered items is a real concern.......an issue in the community of folks that you represent! Shouldn't you indicate your stance? Throw out your support....or not?
Please, give us some guidance. Of course, we look up to our elected officials!
#2,5, and 6 are school board issues. I would be glad to post any comments from any school board member. It is incorrect to assume that just because I am on the city council I have more knowledge about school issues than any other resident of the district. Lots of others know more about it than I do.
I have learned that as an alder people actually take seriously what I have to say about local issues. I try and stick to stuff where I know the details.
#7,8, and 9. Glad your happy with WalMart. What's with chickens? Is this for real or goofing? Trolleys. Electrical? Elevated? Underground?
#10. No way I am letting that kitty cat out of the bag this early.
1. Ask for a new comprehensive plan that is based in reality- No Nicholas and No Maywood. 2. Educate Alderperson about why quality school are important. 3. Let me put up a chicken coop. (the drum beat contines) 4. Are pit bulls legal? 5. Just give us a Monona Drive that is drivable in our lifetime.
'Dog park'. That has come up several times at the Parks Board (of which I am no longer a member, by the way). The feeling has been that there is not a good enough location.
OH. I started this. But, it seems to have gotten off track. I've only been away 24 hours!! Doug, PLEASE!!!
You won't give it away!! Of course the chickens are for real. Apparently, more for real than the school issues, for you.
Is it because you no longer have elementary aged children? Sorry, many of us do. We are not the majority - just ask Cottage Grove!!! But, we are still important.
Hmm. What will be your legacy? We know what the legacy of Mike Duplayee and Phil McDade will be. Ask anyone who they have disparaged in public! The numbers are great. Greater than you might assume.
Ahh, but we digress. Schools. How boring. How about the CITY?? What can we do to improve roads, but control costs??
First of all, you exceeded the daily limit on use of exclamation points!!!
Apparently I have to state the obvious: Schools are important. I am on the city council not the school board.
I have more than enough city issues to keep me busy. I didn't know the city council was doing such a great job running the city that we should tell the school board how to run the schools.
Anyway, Peter Sobol has reopened his blog as a forum for schhol issues.
Legacy; never gave it much thought. Support for the library, parks, and roads (including sidewalks!) for starters. Willingness to raise new issues. Strive to keep people informed.
We are spending a lot of money on roads and utilities. We are making good progress, but are still trying to catch up from a decade of little road work. We do sealcoating and mill-and-overlay to extend the life of roads at lower cost than a full rebuild. Roads and utilities are expensive, period.
Remember Alder McKeever by requiring all committee and board chairs and members to post minutes, agendas, meeting changes etc. at the city website. Active citizenship depends on good information and access to it. Why is it thought too much trouble to do this?
Good suggestion Jim. Here is the current status. Prett good progress, but uneven. I asked the city administrator to remind staff of the policy.

Huh? Ohhhhh...
Well, I'm not saying you have to fess up to your chicken-raising activities. But really, I'm not going to ask for chicken raising (ranching or farming?) to be put on the council agenda because of anonymous posts on my blog.

ReplyDeleteHow about a free clinic for all the WalMart and Menards employees who don't have health insurance?

Random Suggestion:
ReplyDeleteSorry-to post twice....but
1. Shoot the geese
2. Have a summer evening concert at the new shelter-I would help.
"Educate Alderperson about why quality school are [sic] important."
ReplyDeleteWhy, that puts me in mind of the George Bush quote: "Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning?"
