MG Budget Cuts?

A message from the Monona Elementary PTO:

Due to declining enrollment, the Monona Grove School District is facing budget cuts of over $500,000 for the 2008-09 school year. In a meeting scheduled for this Tuesday, March 11 at 6:30 pm in the District Office Board Room (in Nichols School), the School Board will be discussing budgets cuts for next year. Recommended cuts to be discussed at this meeting include the transfer of Maywood's principal to Cottage Grove, the elimination of technical and consumer education classes for sixth graders, and a delay in implementing the World Languages Program.

Other cuts that were considered but are not being recommended at this point include closing Maywood School, moving Monona 6th graders to Glacial Drumlin School, eliminating part or all of the elementary strings program, and eliminating the gifted/talented program for 3-8 grades.

We as a PTO feel that part of our function is to inform parents of these types of critical issues so you can attend meetings and give your input to our School Board. We encourage you to attend this Tuesday's budget work session. There will be no forum for public appearances at this meeting, but attending will give you the opportunity to hear first-hand the budgetary issues facing our district. There will be an opportunity for public appearances at the Board of Education Meeting scheduled for this Wednesday, March 12 at 7:00 pm in the District Office Board Room at Nichols School.

  1. I do not understand why people would rather lose world language, strings, or any other programmatic item in exchange for keeping Maywood open or keeping 6 graders in Monona. Why can't k-6 or k-5 be at Winnequah if it will save money? If it will save program cut, why can't the 6th graders go to the new school?

  2. Can some money be transfered from the sport departments to save the arts and language?
