Good News for the Brewers

Addendum: Here's another view more critical view of Jocketty's reign from the STL Post Disptach's Bernie Miklasz: Don't confuse DeWitt's motives in Jocketty's ouster

The best news of the off-season may already be in for the Milwaukee Brewers and it has nothing to do with Doug Melvin spending some of Mark Attanasio's money. Nope, the good news for the Brewers and the entire NL Central is that the Cardinals fired GM Walt Jocketty this week. This moves increases the likelihood that Tony LaRussa won't be in Cardinal red next year.

Jocketty came to the Cards in late 1994. All he did was hire Tony LaRussa, oversee seven playoff teams (including 6 division winners), had two World Series teams, and won the MLB Exec of the Year twice. The ownership cited "differences in philosophy", which means somebody's ego need to be taken out for a walk. Wow, they ought to be building a statue for the guy, not running him out of town.

Or as a friend suggested, maybe the owners figured out they can make money without winning, so why bother. That's hard to fathom in the ultimate baseball town in America. The Brewers are fortunate to have a bright, wealthy owner with a sincere interest in putting a consistently winning team on the field.
