A trip to Southern Illinois always reminds me of the racial history - pretty much all bad - of that part of the country. The area is still quite racially segregated. Moreover, while a few towns, like my hometown of Mt. Vernon, have sizable African-American populations (around 12% in the 2000 census), many communities are still almost 100% white. These places, like Benton with 20 African-Americans (0.3%) were once known - and not that long ago - as Sundown Towns.
