Randy served this city in just about every role imaginable - his commitment to Monona was unsurpassed. At the time of his death he was Monona's municipal judge. He was also the secretary of The Historic Blooming Grove Historical Society (I understand he was working on an updated history of Monona). In 2006, he served as the co-chair of the Lake Edge/Monona Grove School District Ad Hoc Committee to address issues related to MGHS, its Madison neighbors, and Cold Springs Avenue - truly a thankless task if ever there was one. (You will note that the road is currently under construction). Just one month ago the mayor appointed him to chair the Ad Hoc Fire Department Committee.
Randy won a seat on the city council in 1975 and served 4 years at that time; he was just 3 years out of Monona Grove High School when first elected. He later served as acting city administrator and city attorney (both at the same time for a spell) before coming back for two years on the city council in 1992 when I had the distinct pleasure to serve with him for one year.
Randy was currently serving as the municipal judge for the City of Monona - another nearly thankless task that he performed with dignity and fairness to all who came before him.
As this no doubt incomplete listing reveals, Randy Paul cared deeply about this community. He was never a voice of division, but did not shy from the difficult duties. Indeed, it struck me as I compiled this list of tasks that he was the one we turned to when things were at their most difficult.
Monona, we have lost one of our very best.
So terribly sad. He was a shining example for all public servants and we will miss him for years to come.
