I'd like to express my thanks to everyone who voted for me this past Tuesday. I'd like to express my gratitude to everyone that supported me, especially those folks who contributed time or money or both, and especially to Mary O'Connor, who served as my campaign treasurer, listener, and advisor.
Campaigns are good things - they force the candidates to get out and maybe even take some positions - and they are even better when they are over! No more yard signs!
The overall outcome was about what I expected. Monona traditionally likes the new guy and Bob Miller worked hard and smart - and he had no voting record! The more council votes you make, the more people you tend to irritate along the way. And I knew that I had put in a lot of work and I made an early decision to emphasize my progressive political outlook and let the chips fall where they might.
I have to say I was surprised and a little saddened by Alderman Wiswell's narrow defeat. We certainly did not always agree on the issues and I lacked the necessary patience for a proper appreciation of his sometimes windy discursions, but the guy did care about the issues and the city. He was interested and engaged.
The 'old' council will meet one last time on April 16 and the new council will be sworn in on April 24. The council will elect a council president and new committee assignments will be handed out by the mayor at that time as well.

OK, I hit you when I think you are a bit off of center....
ReplyDeleteHowever, your comments and thoughts are certainly genuine.
Good Stuff.
Is there talk of a recount since the vote was so close? What is the law on this?

ReplyDeleteGood question. Alder Wiswell told me he did not want a recount. I beleive the law provides that if the race is this close, a recount will be done at no cost to the candidate, but the candidate has to ask for it.
ReplyDeleteMore specifically, the statute states that 'any candidate voted for at any election' may request a recount (s. 9.01 Wis. Stats.). Technically then, any one of the four candidates for city council could have asked the recount. However, by my count the time to request a recount has expired - it has to be requested by 5 pm on the third business day after the board of canvassers finishes their work. The canvassers are required to complete their duties within 24 hours of the election.
Please contact our congress people to let them know that we need our governmental channels in a democracy.
ReplyDelete> Please do not support any bills that would eliminate the government channels in our communities. Here in Monona we can participate in our local school board, city council, and the county board meetings. This is a valuable resource which the users of the air waves, cable, etc should provide as part of the franchises that they receive.
