Skatepark Update

Monona Skatepark

A Progress Report and an Invitation

As you probably have noticed, the concrete pad for the skatepark has been poured (next to the Winnequah Park tennis courts) & new lighting has been installed. It looks tremendous with its amazingly smooth finish and sized for two parallel runs – perfect for skateboarding if only we had the skating features…

And we are so close.

The first major feature planned for the park – called a half pipe – costs $44,000. We have paid for the concrete pad and new lighting, but we still need another $13,000 to purchase the half pipe. This piece could be ordered and installed for use this summer – if we raise the money. We will add smaller features as time goes on, but the half pipe will give the ‘boarders’ an excellent recreational experience.

Meet the Challenge

The community-spirited folks at the Monona Festival Committee recently awarded the city a $5,000 challenge grant. If we can raise $5,000 privately, they will match it.

Some Questions We Hear

Is the concrete pad large enough? Yes, while skateparks come in various sizes, the pad will allow for multiple skateboarders to make simultaneous parallel runs.

Isn’t this project taking a long time? Not really. Even with some city funding, it is not at all unusual for skatepark projects to take 5 years or more. We are in our third year.

Are the kids doing anything to help the project? Yes! The young skateboarders have been an integral part of the design process and fundraising.

Let’s Finish The Job!

We Are So Close
Please Help Finish the Skatepark
And Let the Skating Begin!

  1. why are we investing in a skateboard park-when the city can barely maintain....soc. fields, baseball fields, playground eq in our parks and can barely find money for other new projects?

    Further, what is your interest?

Why aren't you pushing to find the money for the new shelter, working on creating a better pool/water park like sun prarie, middleton (to attract whole families rather than simply male teenagers), raising money for a outdoor skating rink, finding a use for parks with torn down play eq (see maywood park-sad-really sad), building or tearing down or improving those awful restrooms that only a desparate person would use at the wonderful park across from the icecream shop ((schulater park)and etc.

Here, you choose (yes, your choice)to promote, push and ask for money for a skateboard park....huh.

Please, oh please "Monona Doug" help me understand how this makes us a better community except for male teens?

Can they buy houses, man the fire dept, pay taxes, populate maywood with kids again (well I guess they could do that) and etc?

It seems to me Rome is burning and we are pouring concerete for what reason?....for a half pipe....full pipe or pvc pipe

  2. Wow, anonymous, what do you have against male teenagers? I have one and I like him a lot. If you check, you will find that male teenagers often come attached to whole families.

Skateboarding is one of the fastest growing recreational activities in the US. Most Dane County suburbs already have skateparks. They provide a healthy recreational outlet for kids that often are not 'joiners', so you won't find them on soccer teams, etc.

If you will look at the plaque at the existing pool you will see my name on it - I was on the council when we built the pool we have now. It has some years of life left before we face that challenge again.

New playground equipment is being installed in Maywood Park right now.

So we are able to do more than one thing at a time. Yes, there are other improvments we also need for our parks - more funding for parks is one of my campaign goals. And by all means, give money to the shelter (I did).

But no way am I apolgizing for supporting a skatepark - it will be a positive addition to this well-rounded community. I have led this effort and will continue to do so proudly.

  3. Hey, anonymous! I have an idea! How about you stop typing and start making a differnece in your community? If you think Maywood park is sad, then why don't you form "Friends of Maywood Park?" and go to the council and tell them what you want to do? Or how about "Friends of Schluter Park?" By the way, girls skate board too. There are precious few things for middle school age kids to do in this town, and these adults, like Doug, are trying to help. As for the pool, it's lovely and not very old. Are you suggesting we replace it? Most importantly, what are you doing to make Monona a better place besides belly-aching?

  4. Hey anonymous, I'm certainly glad to see your positive attitude. I am a new resident to Monona and was extremely excited to hear about this skatepark project. Oh yea, by the way I'm 33 years old, I pay taxes in this city and I can't wait for the day I can drop in and skate this halfpipe and teach my 10 year old daughter to skate. The comment about half pipe,full-pvc pipe tells me you don't even know what your talking about, and the last I checked there are soccer and baseball fields. Where's the skatepark? McFarland, Stoughton, Deerfield, Whitewater, Delavan, Janesville and the list goes on have them for their communties... I grew up on Madison's near west side and spent 7 years of my adolescent and teenage years trying to find places to skate without being chased away, or given tickets by the police. A safe and legal place to skate used to be a dream for kids like me, now thanks to people like Doug this could be a reality for our community's kids. Keep up the good work Doug and thank you!!!!!!!
