So, I went to a city council meeting last night and collegiality broke out! That was really quite enjoyable. The proposed domestic partner health insurance was the main controversial issue on the agenda, but it seems to have the conditional support of at least 4 alders and the mayor. Not sure where Alder Kugle is on it. Alder Wiswell indicated his support and Alder McKeever is a co-sponsor. Mayor Kahl and Alder Thomas would prefer that it be dealt with during the budget deliberations, but support the policy. Alder Suslick was sphinx-like in his silence.
The Winnequah Road/Monona Drive north-end stop sign is back on the agenda as Public Safety has recommended that the stop sign be replaced with a yield sign, which would seem to put us right back where we started. I'm not too keen on the idea of taking the stop signs down just a few months after they went up - without a compelling reason and I haven't heard one yet.
The Mayor is pushing us to sign on to a loose coalition of Beltline property owners and municipalities to push for putting the proposed 345 kv ATC power line underground. The initial voluntary dues, if you will, are $5000. Consider me a skeptic. The coalition seems willing to concede to the Beltline route, but push for putting it underground. First, I have high respect for the professionalism of the PSC staff and I think they will get the necessary data into the record. Second, putting the power line underground through the wetlands would be enormously expensive and almost certainly would be more environmentally damaging to the wetlands. I'm not really sure our interests align with this coalition.

Doug-
ReplyDeleteHow great to read some good press in the paper about Monona. First in the Cap times a nice article about the domestic partner thing, and then the headline in the HI today about that and electric cars- if there was a community where that makes sense, it is this little landlocked one.
Yippee for the City Council for having some initiative and some collegiality and some vision. Except for that sphinx-like Suslick- I am sure he had not done the homework.
How about that wonder CDA Meeting..
ReplyDeleteHuh...
Doug.. I have several questions..
since I missed the CDA meeting this week I have been informed that the CDA deemed the Hickory Lane Mobil Home park as Blighted..
What does that mean and what effect is that going to have on the owners of homes there?
Also, Why did all of the data used to deem it blighted either been existing problems that should have been reported and fixed for the past 20+ years and also the data
that has been caused to happen because of the slow and irresponsible misinformation and false deadlines givin to the parks tenants.. I don't get it..
most of the problems have been existing problems for years that the John's should have been cited on and forced to repair anyways.
the rest of the problems have been mostly caused by the roller coaster ride that the tenants have been on..
discussions are pending on the need to contact the state attorney general and/or the ethics board if there is one or any other governing body that is over your heads.. this is a joke. Something is scammy about this..
Now the deadline for people to move out is May 1st.. yet it looks like there will be maybe 2/3 meetings on this embarressment before that.. still no help for the tenants and still being screwed by the sellers.
your welcome..
