Just returned from 5 days Up North in Superior and Bayfield where they have a lot less snow than down here. I did get to hike out to the ice caves along the south shore of Lake Superior. They are accessible from the parking lot at the end of Meyers Beach Road (just east of Corny). The ice caves are what happens to the 'sea caves' in winter. A lot of weird formations like long ice 'beards'. Great experience! I've been going to the Bayfield for 10 years or so and this was my first chance to walk in the ice caves, although I had paddled in the sea caves at the same location.
I also dined with the flamingoes at Maggies The New England clam chowder and the blackened burger are excellent. And a trip to Bayfield is not entirely complete without breakfast at The Egg Toss - albeit rather pricey.
Another must are the great used book stores - What Goes 'Round in Bayfield and Chequamegon Books in Washburn. Both are really high quality used book stores. I found a couple books that I have had on my list for quite awhile – Nature's Metropolis: Chicago and the Great West by William Cronon, The Englishman's Boy: A Novel by Guy Vanderhaeghe, and The Gilded Age (Modern Library Classics) by Mark Twain.
