Things have been pretty quiet on the city council front. We did pass a capital budget on January 2, which is huge progress from 4 years ago when we passed it in, like, March. We revoked Mr. D's liquor license last night (former Ruby's and Mr. Tequila). They have been more or less closed since last September.
They argued that there were played by Pat Mackesy and maybe they were, but with the state liquor license quota we can't have a license sitting around not being used. It may sound strange, but a liquor license can be an important piece of a commercial redevelopment puzzle. Many restaurants are not going to come to town if they can not get a liquor license. Under state law we can only grant 18. The League of Municipalities is supporting a proposal to do away with the quota system, but I would expect opposition from the Tavern League folks. Anyway, as of now Monona has one liquor license available.
A major upgrade in the city's web site is scheduled for February. I have been pushing for more emphasis on our web presence (along with the Mayor).
I will be bringing forward a proposal in the near future for domestic partner health insurance benefits for city employees. That may liven things up a bit. It's small step, but I think it would say the right thing about Monona and who we want to be.

I think your criticism of Hello Monona is misplaced. Mrs. Litchfeld should be congratulated on her out of the box thinking that has turned the normal newspaper paradigm on its head. Usually people turn to newspapers to find out what is going on- Hello Monona does the opposite! This sort of innovative reader participation may help reverse the decline in newspaper circulation nationwide - and save newspapers a bundle in actual reporting!
ReplyDeleteI like it.
ReplyDeleteShe opens this box of insider smarty pants and expose them as....who approach the world-as if they own it and are doing us a favor by serving.
She has you hoodwinked, that is for certain. She is the ultimate insider, how is it that you do not see that? She is part of that old Monona native crowd who think they own this town and because they have lived here longer than others, they should call the shots. Look where that has got Monona. This ceased being perceived by others in Dane County as a desirable place to live quite some time ago. Her negativity, arrogance and attitude that change is a bad thing is represntative of a problem attitude that needs to change if we are to avoid the further decline.
