The 1968 World Series featured a heart-wrenching loss for the Cards, losing in the 7th game after being up 3 games to 1. It also featured the only World Series game I've ever attended - a 13-1 blow-out in game 6 that included a horrifying 10-run third inning by the Tigers.
The '68 Series featured some great players, like Al Kaline , Lou Brock , and Bob Gibson . Gibby the game's greatest competitor.
And then there was Mickey Lolich. "I guess you could say I'm the redemption of the fat man. A guy will be watching me on TV and see that I don't look in any better shape than he is. 'Hey Maude,' he'll holler, 'Get a load of this guy and he's a twenty-game winner.' " - Mickey Lolich
Check out this 1969 baseball preview cover. Is Gibson near the end of his career? Gibby had just finished a year with the all-time low ERA of 1.12 and he's near the end? Granted that was in an era when players quit in their 30's, but Gibby had just a little left in the tank winning some 104 games after 1968. Another question posed: will there be a "Negro" manager?
