How 'bout those Red Birds?!

The Cardinals bounced the San Diego Fathers from the playoffs. How many top notch players does it take to win a championship? Let’s see, the Red Birds have Albert Pujols and Chris Carpenter and……uhhh…Scott Rolen? – gimpy…Jim Edmonds – totally ganted up…Ronnie Belliard?? Wow. They remind me of the 1980 Phillies with Steve Carlton and Mike Schmidt, a fading Pete Rose and not much else. The Phillies won the World Series championship.

The experts give the Mets a heavy edge, but without Pedro Martinez and Orlando Hernandez, the Mets starting pitching may be as bad or at least as questionable as the Birds’ starters. The Mets biggest pitching edge is that Tom Glavine goes in Game 1 and conceivably could pitch three times if needed while Carpenter can’t go until Game 3. Mets have more mashers, but the Cards have Prince Albert.

  1. If the Mets are counting on geriatric pitchers to win, they might be in for a big letdown. And my girlfriends favorite player is "Pujols."
