OK, I don't necessarily want this to become a weekly habit but Hellooo...Monona did not disappoint this week - the usual howlers are there. She actually did some investigation this week and discovered there is "going to be some kind of island" at the Maywood/Winnequah interesection and asks "what does this mean?" Has the woman never seen a traffic island before?
She discovered that the chokers that she thought last week maybe were supposed to be taken out are still there! Not too surprising since the chokers have been in the plan for the entire project (an attempt in December 2005 at the council to take the chokers out of the design failed).
She ponders whether the chokers will cause bikes to weave in and out of traffic. Well, no, since the purpose of the sidewalks at the chokers is to allow the bikers and walkers to stay in the same line of travel at the edge of the roadway. And the colored pavement she makes such a big deal about. She claimed it would cost $1 per foot, which would be about $800 for the entire project - out of a more than $1 million total.
You can look it up - or call someone with the answers - but apparently passing along unsubstantiated hogwash is easier and more fun.

Next week's Helloooo... Monona:
ReplyDeleteWhy do I keep asking stupid questions? Why don't answers to my questions just drop out of thin air? Why I do I write a newspaper column when I am too lazy to make a few calls and learn a few things? Who knows? Who am I?
The Slinde Project on corner of Femrite and Monona Drive continues to loom large as a boondoggle. Vacant apartments with windows empty of curtains or shades; the glazing is dirty and the stickers have not been razored off. How many condo's are unsold?
ReplyDeleteThe vacant lot stands unkept and tawdry, weeds uncut, mounds of dirt and debris tarnish the image of 'the drive'.
Eminent Domain was used to speculate on a better 'image' for Monona and to make money for the city.
I believe that speculation is best left to private interests who cannot blame the public when their risks don't pan out.
And I don't believe that households and small businesses should suffer from political manuvering like the Femrite takings.
Hellooo...it anyone there?
Note to Jim about the Slinde project: Just so you know, about 1/2 are sold or are awaiting closings. And I live around the corner from what used to be a shithole bunch of houses with crap strewn about on their lawns! Unkept dumps that only decreased my property value. Not doubt you probably live "on the other side" of the drive but for those of us whom it most directly affects, it IS A MOST WELCOME ADDITION to our neighborhood and we're glad they're here!!!
