Does Cindy McCain’s $300,000 Outfit Make Her an Elitist?
(Let's hope they meant that ironically.)
Oscar de la Renta dress: $3,000
Chanel J12 White Ceramic Watch: $4,500
Three-carat diamond earrings: $280,000
Four-strand pearl necklace: $11,000–$25,000
Shoes, designer unknown: $600
Total: Between $299,100 and $313,100
That's three-hundred thousand dollars. Well, the dollar only goes so far these days. Whatever happened to the "respectable Republican cloth coat" that Pat Nixon wore?
This post would be credible if you ran a side-by-side analysis of the cost of Obama and Joe's suits.
ReplyDeleteUntil then, it's irresponsible drivel.
Ooh, hit a nerve ehh?
ReplyDeleteI don't know about Obama or Biden's suits. I did see something about Michelle Obama wearing an $1100 dress, but let's face it, I don't think she'll be dangling any $280,000 ear rings.
Oh, you hit my nerves about every other post. I can handle most of them, because generally, they make good arguments, are founded in fact, and take into account your personal opinion on whatever the issue might be.
ReplyDeleteThis, however, is irresponsible drivel. I repeat myself for lack of a better way to describe it.
Anybody can dress like that - it's what makes up the person that matters.
I am still trying to decide what Obama is made of - and frankly, I'm not even sure that he knows yet.
It isn't unusual for wealthy women of all political persuasions to dress this way. She's got the money in this marriage.
ReplyDeleteShould we talk about what wealthy Obama supporters like Oprah, Streisand, and Madonna wear?
Say, why don't you find out how much the Republican vice-presidential nominee spends on her attire?
Only half? I'll redouble my efforts.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I'm just pointing out the different pond in which these people swim. It reinforces the idea that they do not have a clue or care about us folk down here.
Remember McCain (John not Cindy) thinks you're middle class if you make less than $5 million per year.
And speaking of credibility, when you sign your name to your posts, then you'll have some.
Click the link and read the article. It compares her to Laura Bush who was much more modestly (and more elegantly, I think) attired. It's one thing to drip diamonds at formal dinner sort of thing, and quite another to do it in from of an audience of us common folks. (Also, you didn't count the cost of the Botox in that outfit.)
ReplyDelete"Anyway, I'm just pointing out the different pond in which these people swim. It reinforces the idea that they do not have a clue or care about us folk down here.
ReplyDelete"
Really, what have Obama and his wife done with their life that is better or reinforces this idea?
Besides running for office...and trotting out their lovely little family for people to cooh over.
(yes, palin did the same thing.)
The reality is Cindy has already done more then the blue heeled Obama's who attended Harvard and have led a just as charmed and gited life as Cindy..
The only thing different is that she has done something with her life that is at least intertesting and strikes the chord of giving back.
"Cindy McCain founded the American Voluntary Medical Team (AVMT).[2] It was a non-profit organization that organized trips for doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel to provide MASH-like emergency medical care to disaster-struck or war-torn third-world areas such as Micronesia, Vietnam (before relations were normalized between them and the U.S.[18]), Kuwait (arriving five days after the conclusion of the Gulf War[18]), Iraq, Nicaragua, India, Bangladesh and El Salvador.[9][32][33][34][35] She led 55 of these missions over the next seven years,[17] with each being of at least two weeks' duration.[35"
And are a number of other boards and activities...
Now WHO has lived the life of privledge all of em....cept maybe Palin...and that is another matter.
What have they done with it?
As far as, I can tell the Obama's have done nothing more then feather their own nest.
However, I may have to still vote for them....the issues around this country or too big.
I just resent being told the Obama's are different when the ain't
Ducky Lucky
Are you trying to convince yourself or someone else?
ReplyDeleteWhy do I think Obama is more interested in the shall we say non-rich than McCain? Aside from his policies? After graduating from Harvard Law, where he was the editor of the Harvard Law Review, he went to the south side of Chicago to do community organizing work. He could have gone to Wall Street or any big firm in NYC or DC and cashed in. If he wanted to feather his own nest that was his main chance.
Your angst about whom to vote for is getting stale. I cannot understand how anyone who is actually paying attention, as you seem to be, does not already who they are going to vote for. Choice is pretty clear.
Cindy McCain's AMVT was shut down in 1995 because she was using it as a front organization to steal drugs to support her own drug addiction.
ReplyDeleteBecause she was rich and married to a senator the DOJ put her in a drug diversion program instead of charging her with the felonies of which she is guilty.

myself.
ReplyDeleteDucky Lucky.
"As far as, I can tell the Obama's have done nothing more then feather their own nest."
ReplyDeleteGoing to the south side of chicago to work on behalf of the poor is about as far from feathering your own nest as one can imagine.
Re: her drug addiction. Addiction can happen to anyone, rich or poor, and make them do crazy things.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I do have to say Ducky Lucky quoted the paragraph about AVMT from the same Wikipedia entry, but omitted the reference to Cindy McCain's illegal activities. Bit disingenuous.
"Bit disingenuous."
ReplyDeleteSheesh, I did not do it on purpose.
I doubt she created the whole thing for her addiction. I would guess she began to use it for addiction...no doubt there...WRONG CHOICE.
In any case, I am putting a sign up this week.
Ducky
To Anon - perhaps you haven't gotten the Republican talking points, but they're the ones that were pushing the fact that "Country Club Obama" was different from us. They claimed he was a rich, elitist snob who didn't understand real, working people.
ReplyDeleteNow there are reports of McCain not knowing how many houses he owns, and his wife wearing $300,000 to the RNC convention.
This isn't to argue that owning 7 (10?) houses is wrong, just that it's HYPOCRITICAL to claim the other guy is elitist when you're the one with the $260,000 earings and multiple houses...
Anyway, I don't begrudge McCain his money. He got it the old fashioned way, he married into it. :)
"Sheesh, I did not do it on purpose...In any case, I am putting a sign up this week."
ReplyDeleteOK, I'll withdraw 'disingenuous'.
And whose sign is it? Drum roll.....
I believe that Obama left community organizing to go to law school not that it matters to me one bit.
ReplyDeleteI am happily voting for McCain. I don't think that Obama has enough experience to become president. He's a likeable enough guy but McCain does have a record of reaching across the aisle to get things done. Obama's resume is very thin.
"I believe that Obama left community organizing to go to law school."
ReplyDeleteYou are correct. After law school he went to the U. of Chicago and taught constitutional law, worked for Project Vote, and then a small civil rights firm.
I'll take Obama's judgment over McCain's experience.
A lot of really bad leaders were really experienced. Besides, McCain's health is poor, he's quite old and there's a very good chance he won't live out his term. If experience is your main criteria, then his pick of Palin should should scare the cr** out of you!
ReplyDeleteI don't think so that Cindy McCain’s $300,000 outfit make her an elitist.
ReplyDeleteAll in on Obama.
ReplyDeleteHenny Penny
So where do I get one of those fancy signs?
ReplyDeleteHenny.
Henny,
ReplyDeleteTo get a yard sign, you can try the local Obama HQ on Monroe Street (next to the Madison branch library). They might have them.
You can also order them from http://www.barackobama.com/index.php
If experience is your main criteria, then his pick of Palin should should scare the cr** out of you!
ReplyDeleteOkay, I'll bite. Why does she scare the cr** out of you?
If experience is your main criteria, then his pick of Palin should should scare the cr** out of you!
ReplyDeleteOkay, I'll bite. Why does she scare the cr** out of you?
I didn't say she did. What I meant was that I find it interesting that Obama has been criticized by McCain's camp for lacking experience, so it is very odd that they would put someone with such thin experience a heartbeat away from the presidency. For me, experience isn't my main criteria. As Doug put it so well, I think judgment is more important than experience. And I think McCain's judgment on his veep pick was awful, and so transparently about courting the Christian right wing of the party while trying to pick up a few Hillary stragglers to boot. This wasn't the person he wanted. He caved. Big time.
...so transparently about courting the Christian right wing
ReplyDeleteAgree that solidifying that faction was some of it but considering the huge level of positive response and the large crowds she and McCain are drawing, I'd say it was a masterful stoke on McCain's part.
Funny, when I asked a right-wing Christian guy what he thought of her, he expressed your reservations about being unconvinced of her experience.
I'll take her experience over Obama's judgment that he is ready to lead.

Monona Barbie would have myopia-inducing contact lenses and an enormous SUV that she would use to constantly shuttle kids All the Way to Cottage Grove.
ReplyDelete"Monona Barbie would have myopia-inducing contact lenses and an enormous SUV that she would use to constantly shuttle kids All the Way to Cottage Grove, belongs to the natural step, active in the PTO and does not know whether to love or hate the local school board.
ReplyDeleteSo-speaking of out of touch-
ReplyDeleteWhere are the dogs to chase the geese away around the poop issue?
Gossey Pooppey
I'm checking into the goose diversion effort.
ReplyDeleteWe may bring the Brewers relief corps to the park - that should scare them away.
WOW!
ReplyDeleteI think you are to blame about the Brewers current problem NOT Nervous Ned.
The post you created is the start of a jinx.
Gosh, I swear on my chickens-I am wrong.
