What Grows There?

Or I should say, what grew here? The lone prairie. Found this on the great UW professor of history William Cronon's website. Also go to this page and scroll down to a series of aerial photos of Madison's southwest side.

Mottoes and Maps and Cheese

While rigorously researching the new phrase thingy in my blog's header (yeah, it's up there at the top), I was reminded of Tony Earl's 'Eat Cheese or Die' campaign (discussed on the Cheese Underground). Which led me to the blog Strange Maps' post about state mottoes including this great map of state slogans.

As it says there: The USA mottoes map itself can be found on the Two Eyeballs website, where the artist Emily Wick showcases her work.

Strange Maps has some other great maps, including one of the undiscovered, nonexistent island of Buss (sorry, no 'e'). You really should visit the Strange Maps blog. OK, just try this map with a Beer Garden of Bohemianism...

The Amazing Minard Map

I stumbled across this amazing map created in 1869 by the groundbreaking cartographer Charles Joseph Minard - Wikipedia (EN). The map displays in graphic form the decimation of Napoleons's Grande Armee during Napoleon's Invasion of Russia - Wikipedia (EN). The army starts out with over 400,000 soldiers and return with just 10,000 men by the time they return to the River Niemen.

According to Wikipedia: "Charles Minard's 1869 chart showing the losses in men, their movements, and the temperature of Napoleon's 1812 Russian campaign."

The map is called Carte figurative des pertes successives en hommes de l'Armée Française dans la campagne de Russie 1812-1813.

The map is perhaps the most effective graphic display of information I've ever encountered.

This link takes you to animated display of the map.

City Council on Monday - Help for Pedestrians

It's been a bit slow lately. The City Council meets on Monday and there's a lot of business to be covered, most of it fairly routine.

Here's a link to the agenda and packet: City Council 8/4/08

Improving pedestrian safety, especially for schoolchildren attending Winnequah School, is the aim of several items. New stop signs are proposed at on McKenna at Greenway. No parking will be allowed on one side of Greenway from McKenna west to the dead end, on Schluter from McKenna to Nichols, and on Maywood from Schluter to Nichols. (The Greenway parking restrictions only apply on school days from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM.)

A marked pedestrian walking area will be established in each of these no parking areas.

New snow parking regulations have also been proposed:

Ordinance 8-03-578 Amending Title 10 of the Code of Ordinances Concerning Emergency Snow Removal Regulations and Removal of Illegally Parked Vehicles
